The money between your ears

The money between your ears

I have anxiety. Always have, ever since I was a little kid. I was a worrier, the kid who chewed her cuticles and counted ceiling tiles, steps, and made every (obsessive) effort not to step on a crack because I liked my mother. Even though I knew the likelihood of that nursery rhyme coming true was a highly unlikely.

Most of the time, I just lived with the feeling. The anxiety didn’t bother me too much, especially when I was doing the things that I loved and life was running smoothly in a familiar routine. But when something would go awry – a family move to another community, a fight with a bestie at school – the anxiety got the better of me, making it impossible to focus, and all I really wanted to do was to sit in front of the TV and watch Jeopardy.

It wasn’t until I was an adult that the anxiety was identified as An Actual Thing – something that I could learn how to manage though diet, exercise, meditation, support from my friends and family, and coaching, too.

But here’s the thing. Whether you’ve got anxiety or not, worry and fear about making money, making enough money, and keeping the money that you have already made can be powerful triggers that can take you out of the game.

Let’s say you’ve got a proven record of 5- and maybe even 6-figure months in your business.

But in your quiet moments, if you’re honest, you get scared. (Not that you’d ever admit it to anyone!)

And maybe there’s a good reason for your fear.

Maybe not so long ago, you were scraping up the money to pay for rent (totally know that feeling!).

Whatever the reason, the psychological anxiety operates in the back of your mind.
It keeps you up at night sometimes, like the Princess and the Pea.
No matter how many mattresses you pile on top of that pea, you can still feel it.  And it’s painful.

You try to ignore it. Bury it. Forget about it. And maybe you can for a little while until the next dry spell in your business, when your brain signals that crazy-making spinning that sends you into a panic when you wonder when the next client’s coming or if you’ll be able to make payroll this month.

(makes my tummy hurt just thinking about it!)

You might get migraines that take you out of the game for entire days. Your employees might wonder if you’re going to fire them at any moment – even though doing so is FAR from your mind.

You might feel impatient, frustrated, exhausted.

Here’s the thing: when you are operating your business (not to mention, your life) with the white noise of anxiety and worry running in the background, it’s really difficult to be in flow.

The log-jam in your brain caused by worry and fear cause your creativity and imagination to be blocked.

And ultimately when you’re feeling scared or sad or anxious everything is a little out of alignment – from your sales and marketing to your love life.

Entrepreneurial wisdom teaches us to:

think positively
write affirmations
keep going
visualize
meditate

But what if none of the things that you usually do to calm the mind and shift your mindset are working? Your brain sometimes forgets these simple rules.

When your brain goes haywire, chances are that you probably turn into a hot mess (at least on the inside!).

Here’s the thing: anxiety and worry undermine your creative flow, your enthusiasm, and your wellbeing. And when you’re not feeling your best, making money can be really hard – sort of like you’re slogging through quicksand.

And when you’re a hot mess, forget about selling, forget about marketing. All you really want to do is sit on the couch and watch Jeopardy.

And yet, you can’t. And you know it.

You have to get your self back together and with enthusiasm as quickly as possible because if you’re not makin’ money, nobody’s going to do it for you.

So what’s a girl to do?

Here are some things that help pull me out of anxiety and back into the flow of business and life. I hope they’ll help you, too.

Breathe. Remember to breathe.
Choose trust over doubt.
Choose affluence over lack.
