Solutions for Talented Teens & College Students
The career paths for talented young people are often a mystery. Unlike their peers who know from a young age that they want to be physicians, lawyers, and accountants, some talented young women have a seemingly inexplicable drive to do something different…something outside of the ordinary In fact, many parents of talented kids tell me that they always have know their child wouldn’t – and just couldn’t – work in a structured field where reason is valued over innovation.
The trouble is that some talented youth tend to sell themselves short…and identify a field that “sorta-kinda” fits – and usually bucks the expectations of their parents and teachers. Career decision making is a critical step in a talented young person’s life.
The appropriate career development coaching can mean the difference between and ordinary and an extraordinary life.
Fact: traditional career development models used in most high schools and colleges are inadequate for innovative young people.
Fact: few high school guidance counselors and college career counselors are trained in the cutting edge methods that have been proven to appropriately guide innovative young people toward colleges and vocations that maximize their creative potential.
For the past 13 years, I have provided specialized career development coaching to creative and talented young people. Here’s what I’ve learned:
In America, there’s a myth that suggests that if you’re smart and talented, you’ll naturally figure out what you’re supposed to do with your life.
In my professional experience, many talented kids who are supposed to have “the world by the tail” actually suffer from symptoms of depression and anxiety. For the most part, their symptoms are related to fear and worry about the future – and specifically about what they are supposed to do with their lives.
I have found that with specialized career development, these talented young people feel better, are more motivated, and accomplish their goals more quickly and easily.
In 2005, I co-founded CLEOS (counseling laboratory for the exploration of optimal states) at the University of Kansas to provide creative people with specialized career coaching that magnifies and expands creativity and talent. Since its inception in 2005, over 700 creative young people have participated in the program. And the research is clear: CLEOS works. After participating, young people are more engaged in activities that align with their creativity. They have a better understanding of their personalities, values, strengths, and creative flow: invaluable information for making career decisions that highlight – rather than hide – creativity.
Rather than compromising their creativity for something “practical”, CLEOS teaches young people to follow their creative flow – and to bring their strengths front-and-center into their career development plan.
Until recently, CLEOS was only available in Kansas.
Now, I’m making the CLEOS career development program available to talented and innovative teens and young adults in Arizona and around the world.
